Treatment Options Gynecological Implants

Radiation Oncology Associates physicians perform radioactive implants for the treatment of various gynecological cancers, including those involving the uterus, cervix, and vagina. The purpose of such implants, which are usually preceded by an approximately 5 week course of daily external beam radiation therapy, is to deliver a relatively high curative dose of radiation to the residual tumor while minimizing the radiation dose to normal surrounding tissues.

Both high dose rate (HDR) and low dose rate (LDR) implants are performed. The treatment for uterine carcinoma usually involves surgical removal of the uterus, followed by daily pelvis radiation and then high dose rate treatment to the top portion of the vagina. Radiation treatment of cervix and vaginal carcinoma may be post-operative, but often is primary radiation therapy only, and consists of daily pelvis radiation along with either high dose rate or low dose rate implants to the cervix or vaginal tumor mass.
