Total Skin Electron
Therapy
Patients who are diagnosed with cutaneous T-cell lymphoma (such as mycosis
fungoides, Sezary Syndrome) may benefit from treatment of the entire skin
surface using electrons. This is a technically challenging treatment that we
are able to provide for our patients. This treatment can also be used for
other less common cutaneous lymphomas. The use of electrons allows treatment of the skin while reducing the amount of radiation received by deep tissues and organs. The patient stands on a platform in a specified position at a distance from the treatment machine. The position of the patient is changed to allow for treatment of the entire skin surface as treatments are done 3 times per week. Extensive physics support is required to monitor dose to shield areas that are sensitive and boost those areas where needed. Patients are closely followed to monitor for side effects, and prolonged, direct exposure of sunlight to the bare skin should be avoided.
